Bangladesh's National Flag: A Symbol of History and Pride
Origins and Adoption
The national flag of Bangladesh was officially adopted on January 17, 1972.
Its design is based on a similar flag used during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.
Symbolism and Design
The flag consists of a dark bluish green field background incorporating a large off-centre orange-red disk. The flag's width-to-length ratio is 3 to 5.
The green symbolizes the fertile countryside of Bangladesh. Green is also a color representing Islam, which is the predominant religion in the country.
The red circle represents the sun and the blood of those who sacrificed their lives for Bangladesh's independence.
